Senior Service - Habitat for Humanity At Habitat for Humanity in Oxnard, Louisville seniors painted, hammered and swept to their hearts content. Their work is helping to build homes for those in need in the Ventura County area.
After getting in a fight the day before Habitat with my best friend I thought my experience there was going to be terrible. Yet by the first break on the first day, I hung out with friends that I usually don't hang out with at school. We had so much fun, laughing, using power tools, and painting. It seemed that we always got the best jobs to do. It was also fun to know that my height was useful. They would always say to me "come with me, we can use your height". It was thrilling. Habitat was an amazing experience and I loved working with heavy machinery because I felt like an individual with the power to handle any tasks that come my way. In a way it was good that my friend and I were not talking because I probably would not have hung out with the wonderful people I did if I was glued to my friend the whole time. Thank you to all of those friends who made my Habitat experience so memorable.
Habitat was so much fun! My favorite thing to do was painting. Everyone worked hard and we laughed a lot. The days were long and the work was hard, but it was worth it. I would definitly do it again. I really liked the Ventura County Habitat and I truly feel like I was able to help the community.
I've done the Habitat service since I was a sophomore and so I was very excited about going again because it usually kept me real busy. But, somehow, at this site and point in time, it was like the Great Depression. Most of us were out of a job after 5 minutes. A lot of us would look for work and find little ones but most of the time, I was just looking. Everyone was nice as peach though. Free pizza and all. It's just that since this is a charity organization, I expected it to be better organized in that the least amount of materials will be used in order to conserve it for another site. But, a lot of us were asked to paint when there wasn't really anything to paint. There was a lot of waste of paint as well as even space for the construction of the building. It still is a good activity to do, but there wasn't much to do this time. Wow, I sounded so serious.
Habitat was a lot of fun! even though it was a long two days, it was worth it because of all the people that we helped with the homes we built. my favorite part was climbing on the scaffold and painting or just lying out on the roof and relaxing. the site manager, Buzz, was great and he helped us with the jobs that we did and always kept a positive attitude. i have participated in many habitats but those two days with all my Louisville girls were certaintly my favorite!
I have always heard that the Habitat service projects were so fun, and I decided to check it out for myself. I'm not going to lie, some of it was rough work, and the days were a little long, but I did have a fun time. I made good memories with my buddies and I learned how to use power tools! The other volunteers were also really nice. Habitat is a great project helping people who need it, and I really felt that what I was doing helped. I definitely recommend Habitat and hopefully one day I'll be able to go again.
I've always wanted to do Habitat for Humanity and i was glad that i finally got the chance to, even more excited that i'd get to be with my close friends and other seniors. Habitat wasn't really what i expected it to be but none-the-less i had a great time. Koch, Ellen, and i had the task of taking off these metal wall corners that people had measured wrong, and then to nail on new ones, and that was my favorite part because it was the most work that i did and i felt that i had accomplished something. Other than that i painted a bit and moved a lot of stuff from one shed to another. I was glad that my manly muscles were of service and that nothing was extremely heavy. Buzz bought us all pizza on the last day and that was great. We worked so well that we even ran out of things to do. Anyways, i loved habitat, especially the cool working glasses that i had to wear, and i don't think that we could have had a better group.
I am so glad i finally had the opportunity to do Habitat for Humanity. I had always heard from other students who had participated in it that they had a great time, and i had a similar experience. I really felt like I was doing a service for people who really need it. I would absolutely recommend this community service for anyone who wants to help out, and would love to participate in it again.
This was my first time working with Habitat for Humanity and I am very glad I got to be apart of this experience. It was really great being able to help complete a house! My favorite part was when I got to use a hammer because that was my first time and I thought it was SO fun haha. At some points no one had any work for us to do, but other than that it was a really great time. This was definitely not my last time volunteering for this organization.
This was my first time doing habitat and it was surprisingly really fun! I thought I would be really tired all day because we had to get up so early but once we got there everyone's energy was so great. Buzz was awesome and I'm so glad I got a chance to help out.
I had never participated in Habitat for Humanity before so I figured it was time to see what it was all about. Habitat was awesome, probably on the contrary to everyone else I kind of enjoyed waking up early and driving to school when it was still dark. The bus rides there were very fun because everyone talked and bonded. When we got there Riley and I became a team and decided to become the new Ty Pennington's, and to one day have our own home makeover show. We nailed the new metal sheets to the corners of the wall; we used our muscles to heave dry wall into piles, and then nailed nails into the side of a house above and below the windows. For me hammering was my favorite part, it got a lot of frustration out and made me feel powerful, plus Mr. Nick said I was really good at it. Overall Habitat was an amazing experience, all the workers were extremely nice, I bonded with new people, and helped others in need.
I had gotten in a fight the day before with my best friend (i think you can tell who this person is....), and since we werent speaking I thought I was going to have a miserable time but, actually, we both had the same great experience. Had I been speaking with her during the time of this habitat I probably would not have hung out with the people I did and would not have had such an amazing time. I got to know the other girls that I worked with on a personal basis and now feel that I have stronger friendships with them. I have been to several habitats and really enjoy this habitat site much better than the other one I have visited because the site it more organized and the people who work there, especially buzz, are much more welcoming. This was my first time getting to paint at habitat and it was the best experience because it never gets tiring. It was awesome painting the houses and then decorating ourselves showing off our hardwork. I also loved how at the end everyone worked together to make and nail a painted cross together that we had assembled out of extra scraps of wood. whatever happened to that by the way??? I overall had an amazing time and cant wait to return to the site and am glad for the new friendships I made. Oh, and me and that friend made up the day after if anyone was still wondering...
i really enjoyed habitat for humanity. i felt not only that i was giving back to society but that i was bonding with my class as well. the best moment for me was when a group of us had to clean out and re paint a shed. we sang songs from our childhood and today. the workers at habitat were all really nice and i would be more than happy to go back and work there again!
Habitat was amazing! I loved getting to paint and even though the scaffolds were scary and I almost cried, my friends held my hands and only pretended to push me off a few times. :) Buzz was really fun and Hilaire was the best bus buddy ever! I loved working with the girls that went on this service with me. They are all wonderful and I believe that we were a great help to the community.
Jill (As if you couldn't tell) Utter insanity. Arri, I'm sorry for painting your hair, but it did look good. Yes everyone, I am Jesus! Mrs. Matteus, sorry for the trauma of disillusionment. Got over fear of heights, sat on roof OMG! Amazing, did stuff, got to play barrista over by the coffee machine. NO YOU CAN'T JACK MY RECIPE!! Driller Killer is my favorite movie...why in heck did you let me hang drywall?! (Chases Arri with drill) Singing like rockstars while sweeping/inhaling drywall dust is the most fun ever! (I don't think that white powder was really drywall dust, lol!) I'm so sleep deprived! (Go see 42nd Street, fellow bloggers!)
No seriously, Habitat was awesome. I love actually getting my hands dirty and helping out the community, plus it was gorgeous there. Frogs croaking, farmland everywhere...Magic. I wanna go back! The foreman, Buzz, was a sweetheart, and he acknowledged the fact that we could actually work if we wanted to.
From the moment we stepped off the bus onto the habitat site, we were welcomed. The director was so nice to all of us and right away made the atmosphere fun and inviting. The work we did on the first day was so fun, I got up on scaffolding and painted one of the houses. The second day was so much fun: we started off nailing windows into the walls and then we organized and painted the shed while singing songs and having fun. Both days were incredibly enjoyable and I would reccomend this service opportunity above the others that i've done by far.
Habitat for Humanity is something I always wanted to try, so I was excited when I found out I would be doing this for my Senior Service Project. A lot of the work was very difficult, but I learned a lot! I learned how to properly use a hammer and other tools. It was rewarding to know that someone would be living in the house I was helping to build. I had a great experience.
I had such a great time at Habitat! All of the girls there had a great attitude and the director of the whole show, Buzz, made the experience even better with his positive attitude also. The work we did was very fun because of all the painting. We were always laughing while working and it made the experience all the more memorable. Spending that time with so many members of my class was fantastic because everyone got along and helped each other, it didn't matter which group of people you normally hung out with. This site was great because it was much more organized than the other Habitat site i had been too, and everyone working there, the LV girls and the volunteers, were always smiling. It was overall a wonderful experience!
Habitat was so great. I've done Habitat once before, but at the other site, and I must say that my experience this time was amazing. I'm obsessed with the director Buzz...by far the coolest person that I've ever met. It's not very often that you get a group of girls doing construction or painting. And to know that all of what we were doing was to help others is such an amazing feeling. Even though the days were long, they were so fulfilling. I had the same experience as Jill...I sat on a roof and overcame my fear of heights! Overall, Habitat was a blast, and I would most definitely love to do it all over again.
Habitat was so much fun, I wish I hadn't waited until second semester senior year for my first Habitat experience. I agree with Chesca that it seemed like there were only alot of little jobs to do, and we had to keep asking for more to do, but it was still fun, especially when we got a big job to do. I never realized how much work goes into a single house, or that we could even help, but they really gave us the freedom to work where we were needed.
Habitat was a lot of fun. We painted, cleared things out, put in drywall screws, and swept up drywall residue. It was fun doing different work for a change, made lots more fun by being with friends. We even sat on the roof of one of the houses for a little while. I was impressed with Habitat's economy; none of the scrap materials was wasted.
Hey! so habitat was really fun! (no joke!) I picked a service this time around that I thought would be the most hands on and this was certainly that! It was really great being a part of something so great. We helped build a home that someone will someday live in. Some one who for one resaon or another without the help of Habitat would not have these kinds of amazing living arrangements. To know all that makes it all so much more special and meaningful. I truly enjoyed the day and everyone was so nice and appreciative of our presence and work. I can't wait to do it again! Thanks for the pizza Buzz!
i had a lot of fun at habitat cause i love to work on things as well as build things. ive been wanting to go on habitat for awhile now, but ive never really had the chacne because of school and other community service things that i have done in the past. i did habitat with one of my good friends emmy, and having her there to experience it with me made the experience all the more exciting. i hope to be able to volenteer at habitat for many more yrs to come and i would not trade any of my experiences there for anything. i loved the environment and i loved being able to do things that i love doing.
emmy: i loved habitat! it was my first time there and i wasn't sure what to expect. i was a little nervous but it was so much fun. i had never painted a house before, but as soon as they named the job i was the first person with a ladder trying to reach the scaffolding. i had so much fun and had a great time bonding with my classmates, even the ones i dont usually talk to. i loved habitat!!!
Habitat was so much fun! It was a great way to give back to the community and have a great time. The second day was the best for numerous reasons. First of all, we planned the day before to come to work in plaid... so that got us into a working mood! :) Then we did nailing, lets just say we were all naturals! Then we cleaned out this shed and painted it. Oh, and during all these fun activities we graced everyone with our beautiful singing voices to help the job along. I would definitely do it again!
This was my third or fourth time at Habitat, and let me tell you it was not exactly the place i wanted to be. Wends. morning i got up earlier then normal, and i was not in the best of mood. I thought i knew how the day was going to unfold: get told what to do (consisting of moving something heavy back and forth), having lunch and then ending the day with moving more heavy equipment to yet another shed. However, it was for the first time organized they knew what to have us do. Some moved stuff, others labeled things and our group painted. But not just any kind of painting, oh no, we painted the top of a two story house. Let me tell you that was the best! I have no fear of heights, and would rather be higher then others given it does not happen very often... given that i am only 5'2... Overall it was an amazing experience and i actually wanted to go back on Friday, but enjoyed the day off
I had a lot of fun helping build houses for Habitat. I got to nail walls, work with plaster, paint, and sweep. I had a lot of good laughs with my friends, and I also took advantage of the opportunity that Habitat gave me to pretend that I was a true construcion worker. In addition to the less serious aspects of Habitat, I enjoyed being able to help out less fortunate families by contributing to the construction of their homes. I had a great time, and wouldnt hesitate to take part in Habitat again.
Habitat was awesome! I so enjoyed hanging out with my friends and making new ones. I really reconnected with people and it was alot of fun to just talk about how everyone's life was going. And I loved "serenading" the worksite with our lovely tunes while cleaning out the almighty house of plasterdust! I really felt a sense of satisfaction at the end of the day, knowing that I had accomplished something of worth.
